A lot of my friends ask me “how to do keyword research for SEO?”
So, I have decided to make a post on this very important SEO topic. Keyword Research is one of the most important parts of the on-page SEO optimization of your blog or website. Hopefully, this post will help all the people who are looking for keyword research tutorial.
What is a Keyword?
Keywords are words or phrases that we type into Google, Yahoo, Bing or any other search engine to find specific information related to that word or phrase. In this post, I am going to show you how easy it is to find profitable keyword without spending any money (FREE).
The first way that I am going to show you is the easiest and it does not require any keyword tool. All you need is a search engine like Google, Bing, Yahoo. When you put any keyword to these search engines, these search engine will show you related keyword phrases based on User search habits.
For example, I am going to use the keyword “weight loss”. When you put the keyword into the search box of Google, it will show you the search results according to its algorithm. At the end of the search results, you will find related search as shown below.
In the case of Bing also you can see the related search as shown below.
Note down the related keywords. This is a very effective way to do keyword research for any subject or niche. I see a lot of so-called “gurus” don’t teach this method. They only tell you to use Google keyword tool. The interesting fact is that you won’t be able to find most of these long tail keywords (comparatively low competition keywords) in Google keyword planner directly.
Keyword Research with Google Keyword Planner
To use the google keyword planner tool you need to have a Gmail account. If you don’t have a Gmail account just create a Google account, it’s very easy. To find the keyword tool log in to the google ad words account. Click on the tab that says tools at the top. In the drop-down menu click on “Keyword Planner”.
The Keyword planner tool will be loaded on your browser and you will be prompted to enter your Keyword phrase. You will find a lot of other options. Don’t worry most of those options are for advertisers so as long as you are not planning to advertise on Google you don’t have to think about any other options.
For keyword research, you might want to play with only two options. The first option is Targeting and the second is Keyword filter.
If you have a local business and want to do keyword research for your business, you can use the targeting feature. It will help you to get an accurate count of how many people are searching for your business. Remember If you don’t use the targeting option google will show the search volume from all over the world. This could mislead you. Because you might think that 100,00 people per month are searching for your local business but in reality, it might only be 1000 people per month.

The “keyword filters” feature will enable you to search for keyword based on monthly search volume. For example, you can set a filter that will only allow to display keywords that have at least 1000 searches per month and filter out all the keywords that have lower than 1000 monthly searches.
So put your main keyword in the box and set up targeting and filtering (optional) if you want, after that click on the button that says “get ideas”. Read this post to know the best 10 ways to get Post Ideas for your Blog.
Now you will arrive at search volume page of Google keyword planner. You will find this two tab “Ad group ideas” and “Keyword ideas”. You will see “Ad group ideas” is activated by default. Click on the other tab that says “keyword ideas”. You will find the search volume and other stats for your main keyword as well as a long list of the related keyword below.
You will find all the related keywords listed according to their relevance. In order to make your website/blog/post more relevant copy these keywords and use them on your website.
Although the related keywords are arranged by relevance you can rearrange the list based on different things like competition, volume, suggested bid. Keep in mind all these tabs are basically created for advertisers. Google is not going to make money by helping you to find keywords and rank on google for free. Google is making huge money from advertisement. So, Google has all these features on keyword planner.
You can take some advantages of these tools.
For example, you can get some idea of the value of your keyword by the suggested bid column. The dollar (Rupees if you are from India) amount you see is a suggestion of the bid for that particular keyword (it’s not accurate, but still you can have the idea). So the information will definitely help you to make a decision on which keyword you should go for.
Either you can write down the keywords or you can download directly from Google keyword planner tool. It will be downloaded as an Excel CSV file. You can sort through the list using Microsoft Excel.
No doubt google keyword planner is the best free tool for keyword research but I always have some other resources ready for my keyword research. I would recommend you to use these two alternative sites for keyword research.
SEMrush is a great keyword research and suggestion tool. The best thing is that is has a free version (but limited). It is limited to 10 search results but it’s worth trying. You can find both volume and cost per click data (CPC). The CPC data is almost like the suggested bid on the Google keyword planner.
Advertisers are paying money depending on the profitability of any keyword. If the keyword is profitable advertisers will pay more money to bid on that keyword, that’s how the market sets the price. So, look for keywords with high CPC rate and low competition. This is the main part of any keyword research.
Ubersuggest allows you to get more keyword ideas. The seed keyword you put here will show some great long tail keyword which will be very helpful for ranking on google comparatively fast.
Tips to Choose the right Keyword
- Always look for long tail keywords. It will definitely help you to rank on Google and other search engines. A long tail keyword or phrase with minimum 4 words is necessary. Read this post how to generate 20000 monthly search visitors through long tail traffic by Neil Patel.
- Go for keywords which are used for buying things. These keywords are called buyer keywords. For example, “free weight loss tips” is not a buyer keyword because the persons that are looking for “free weight loss tips” is not going to spend any money on the other hand “weight loss capsules” is a buyer keyword because those who are looking for “weight loss capsules” are most probably willing to spend money for weight loss capsules. Having a buyer keyword is going to be profitable for your business.
