Do you know what is SEO actually?
Do you think it is all about handling technical details? The answer is not a complete “YES” what you are expecting. SEO is basically an art of understanding the psyche of your user’s needs and requirements then providing them with exactly what they are waiting for. Now it’s the time to know what is the Dwell time, it is often ignored but actually a very significant aspect of SEO. Google’s decision of ranking your website generally depends on a user-based metric called Dwell time. So in short, we need to get success with dwell time for getting a good position in the SERPs.
What is the Definition of Dwell Time?
“Dwell time is a user-based metric that analyzes how much the user is engaged, what is SERPs CTRs and session duration.” The dwell time calculation is not publicly available but it is a factor that we cannot ignore due to its influences on search engine results.
Do not blend session duration and bounce rate with dwell times as they all three are different things so do not get confused with this. Dwell time is actually the combination of these two components (“session duration” and “bounce rate”).
According to Dr. Peter J. Meyers at Moz,
“Dwell time is an amalgam of bounce rate and time-on-site metrics”
Here we can cogitate about a formula that will help in how to calculate dwell time. It would be adequate to say that “An optimal bounce rate + a fit session duration + a strapping SERP CTRs = a good dwell time.”
So here we have found three important components of dwell time which are:
- Bounce Rate
- SERP CTR
- Session Duration
Now you do not need to get confused anymore as I am going to define all these components separately.
Bounce rate is actually the percentage of those visitors who go away or leave your website after visiting only one page on your website. In Google Analytics, it look like this.
SERP CTR (Click Through Rate)
It is about how many people click on your website when your website shows in the search result for any query i.e. how many people go to click on your website’s link when they find that in search results.
It is the average length of time for which a user stays on your website. In Google Analytics, we can find it through
Audience > Behavior > Engagement.
What is an Ideal Dwell Time?
Before finding the answer to this question, we need to put the same question for its two components i.e. “Session Duration” and “Bounce Rate”.
I mean first, we are required to know what is good session duration and what is good bounce rate then finally we will get the answer for what is an ideal dwell time.
0 to 40% bounce rate = Good
40% to 60% bounce rate= Fair
60% to 100% bounce rate= Poor
And for ideal session duration.
Session duration differs according to keywords, the device in use, time of visiting, unique vs. returning visitors etc.
For Google, a less than two minutes session duration is adverse and unfavorable.
- Less than two minutes session duration = Bad
- Over a two-minute session duration = Good
Now come to our first question about an “Ideal Dwell Time” so,
“Over one-minute session duration + Less than 60% bounce rate = an average dwell time“
“Over two minutes session duration + Less than 40% bounce rate = an ideal dwell time“
How can You Perk up Dwell Time?
Finally, we have reached to the point that how to improve dwell time?
The answer to this final question is completely plain that is create killer content i.e, we need to create good and scannable content if we want to get good results. While writing, you should keep the user’s requirement in your mind and write content in a way that is comprehensible for your user and he/she can happily read from start to end due to its awesomeness.
There are four main factors that help.
- Do proper keyword research and choose the right keywords for your content. It will bring more visitors to your website.
- Make sure that you have designed a fully functional, responsive and user-friendly website i.e, site’s design, color scheme, font family or alignments etc. also make sure that your website has a mobile version too as it is in trend now to make the search from mobiles.
- Layout of your website should not be like a mess, it should be easy to navigate on your website. There are various tools to make your website’s navigation simple and trouble-free.
- Final and most significant point improves your web page’s load time. It helps to decrease bounce rate.
